This is to officially welcome you to the Department of Basic Sciences, a department domiciled in the Faculty of Basic and Applied Sciences in Benson Idahosa University. The Department was birthed in 2002 at the inception of Benson Idahosa University.
The Department comprises:
- Biochemistry Unit
- Microbiology Unit
- Physics Unit
- Geophysics Unit
The Bachelor of Science programme in Biochemistry is designed to empower the students with the basic general knowledge and skills in various areas of Biochemistry, which they can develop to function as Biochemists, Medicine, Biotechnology, Agriculture, Environmental Science, and various other industries and biological research areas.
The Bachelor of Science in Microbiology programme is designed to expose students to the basic field of specialization in Microbiology. It is geared towards the in-depth acquisition of the right type ok skills, scientific knowledge, competence and norms in both the theoretical and experimental aspects of the subjects.
The Bachelor of Science in Physics programme aims at proving students with a broad and balanced foundation of physics knowledge and practical skills. Also to instill in students a sense of enthusiasm for physics, and appreciation of its application in different contexts. Additionally, to develop in students through an education in Physics a range of transferable skills of value in physics and other areas.
The Bachelor of Science in Geophysics programme is intended to provide mission-oriented geoscience knowledge and expertise to all the students that go through the programme and equip them with the necessary skills to have adequate knowledge of the composition of the earth’s subsurface and be able to fully exploit the earth’s natural resources for national development.
The department is made up of qualified members of staff that have excelled in their various fields of endeavours. The Academic staff distribution as mandated by National University’s Commission (NUC) is well captured as reflected on the staff strength below. To this end, there are seasoned professors and other categories of the academic members of staff who have made very significant impact in their respective disciplines. Some have patented products in Nigeria and abroad.
The members of academic staff have strong driving force into researches which is consolidated by the huge financial grants from the school. The various units have well equipped laboratories. In addition to these, there is a research laboratory, where researches are carried out. Aside the undergraduate courses, the department also runs the Postgraduate courses.
The department has a central laboratory fitted with state – of – the – out equipment in the areas of Biotechnology metal analyses and others. This central laboratory is in addition to the various well equipped laboratories in Biochemistry, Microbiology and Physics.
Besides the undergraduate programmes of the Department, it has the authorization of the NUC to run Postgraduate courses such M.Sc. Biochemistry, and Postgraduate Diploma in Microbiology.
