Biochemistry

Biochemistry as a discipline has made tremendous strides over the last seventy years. It has made enormous contributions to the growth of medical science, biology, agriculture and industry.

PHILOSOPHY

The programme is designed to expose students to the basic field of specialization in Biochemistry.  It is geared towards the in-depth acquisition of the right type of skills, scientific knowledge, competence and norms in both the theoretical and the experimental aspects of the subjects.  This will ensure that the products of the programme are capable of making meaningful contributions towards the realization of the national dream of a sound scientific base for technological and industrial advancement which furthers the Benson Idahosa University’s vision of raising academics, professionals and entrepreneurs, who will be effective disciples for Christ by excelling in their professional fields.

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES

Employment opportunities should be on the increase with growth of the National Economy. Biochemists may find employment in hospitals as hospital biochemists, in agriculture, food processing and pharmaceutical industries – as quality analysts; in the brewing industries as brewers, in beautification industries as experts in cosmetology; in the tanning and leather industry; and as research scientists in such diverse areas as Oncology, Molecular Biology, Ecology, Environmental pollution and of course in teaching at higher institutions of learning. So far biochemists have been underutilized in the National Economy.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE DEGREE PROGRAMME

  1. To provide students with a broad and balanced foundation of biochemical knowledge and practical skills.
  2. To develop in students the ability to apply knowledge and skills to achieving solutions to theoretical and practical problems in Biochemistry.
  3. To develop in students, a range of transferable skills that are of value in biochemical and non-biochemical employment.
  4. To provide students with knowledge and skills from which they can proceed to further studies in specialized areas of biochemistry or multi-disciplinary area involving biochemistry.
  5. To provide, through training and orientation, and appreciation of the salutary rewards of inter-multi-disciplinary approach to the solution of complex life problems.
  6. To generate in students an appreciation of the importance of biochemistry to industrial, economic, environmental, technological and social development.
  7. To instill in students a sense of enthusiasm for biochemistry, an appreciation of its application in different contexts and to involve them in an intellectually stimulating and satisfying experience of learning and studying.
