Admission Requirements

UTME Entry Requirements

Candidates seeking admission, into Mechanical Engineering must have credits in five subjects at ‘O’ Level GCE or WASSCE or NECO in not more two sittings.
The subjects should include English Language, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. In addition, candidates must pass the U.M.E. in the following subjects:
English Language, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.

Direct Entry Requirements

Direct entry candidates must fulfill the conditions in (a) above and have GCE ‘A’ level passes in at least two subjects which must include Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry. Also, candidate with OND in Mechanical Engineering or any relatedprogramme with at least an upper credit and possess the conditions in UTME Entry Requirements, can be admitted into 200 level degree programme in the Faculty of Engineering.

Programme Structure

The Bachelor of Engineering degree in Mechanical Engineering is a five-year or ten semester duration programme for students admitted by UTME into 100 level and four-year or eight semester duration programme for students admitted by direct entry into 200 level. In both circumstances three industrial training schedules are undertaken before the completion of the
programme. At the 100 level, students offer courses in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and General Studies. At the 200 level, common general engineering courses are taken. At the 300
level, students are introduced to the various mechanical engineering courses and in addition, they undertake further engineering mathematics courses with students of other departments in the
faculty. At the 400 level, more coursework on mechanical engineering will be done during the first semester while during the second semester, students will go on six months industrial
training in any mechanical or associated industry. At the 500 level, students will take some advanced mechanical engineering courses coupled with engineering management and law
courses which are common to all departments in the Faculty. At this level also, students will embark on distinct final year research projects.

Duration of Programmes

Minimum duration of engineering programmes to qualify a student for the award of an honours degree is five academic sessions for candidates admitted via the UTME with Senior Secondary
School Certificate or GCE ‘O’ Level qualifications. They begin from 100 level and conclude at 500 level. While candidates admitted with relevant passes in Mathematics, Physics and
Chemistry at GCE ‘A’ Level, OND or equivalent who enrolled by Direct Entry will spend a minimum of four academic sessions provided that they satisfy all the other University
matriculation requirements. They begin from 200 level and conclude at 500 level. The maximum length of time allowed to obtain a degree in the Faculty shall be fourteen semesters for the 5-year degree programme and twelve semesters for students admitted through direct entry into 200 level. For extension beyond the maximum period, a special permission of Senate shall be
required on the recommendation of the Faculty Board.
